UCLA freshman tennis player Riza Zalameda advanced to the second round of singles play at the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships on Monday. She is the only Bruins singles player left in the draw, as sophomore Daniela Bercek was upset in opening round play.

Zalameda, who improved to 28-11 on the season with the win, upset sixth-seeded Robin Stephenson of Alabama, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. She next faces the winner between North Carolina's Kendall Cline and Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru in the second round on Tuesday.

Bercek, a 9-16 seed in the tournament, fell upset to TCU's Helena Besovic, 7-6(2), 6-4. She ends the season with a 19-10 overall record in singles play.

Bercek and Zalameda, seeded fourth in the doubles draw, open up play tomorrow against New Mexico's Iva Gersic/Maja Kovacek. Bercek is the defending NCAA Doubles Champion with former teammate Lauren Fisher.
