LOS ANGELES - Seventeen-time NCAA men's volleyball champion UCLA takes its 1-0 record and No.1 ranking to Hawaii for the prestigious Outrigger Hotels Invitational, Jan. 20-22, at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The top-ranked ranked Bruins, who return four starters from last year's team that posted a 28-4 record, defeated UC Santa Barbara 15-2, 15-6, 15-11 in the league opener for both teams Jan. 13 at Pauley Pavilion.
Against UCSB, the Bruins were led in kills by junior Evan Thatcher and senior Fred Robins who spiked nine apiece. Senior Danny Farmer and sophomore Mark Williams added eight kills apiece, and junior All-American setter Brandon Taliaferro distributed 43 set assists and led the Bruins with four total blocks. Junior All-American Adam Naeve added seven kills and three aces in two games, and junior Matt Grace added a career high five kills in eight attempts off the bench in Game 3.
Junior Rick Rauth led the Gauchos with nine kills.
The Bruins will open the Outrigger event against Penn State, which is 0-4 overall after losing three matches last week to visiting Pepperdine. UCLA leads the series against the Nittany Lions 13-5 and defeated PSU 3-0 last Jan. 8 in the same tournament.
On Jan. 21, the Bruins meet No.2 ranked Lewis in a rematch of the 1998 NCAA semifinals. Last April 30, the Flyers led the Bruins 1-0 in games and 9-7 in Game 2 before UCLA reeled off the next 19 points to eventually win the match, 3-2. The victory enabled the Bruins to advance to the NCAA finals where they defeated Pepperdine 3-0 to win their 17th title. UCLA leads the series with Lewis 6-0 two of those victories came in the NCAA semifinals.
Last season, the Bruins defeated Hawaii in their final match of this event to capture the tournament title. After defeating the Rainbows again in a league match on Mar. 20, UH returned the favor Mar. 21 with a 3-0 sweep. UCLA leads this series 32-8
