Undefeated Bruins to Face San Diego, USC This Week . . .
The second-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (7-0) has a pair of matches on the schedule this week, beginning with No. 44 San Diego (0-2) on Tuesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins then hit the road for the first time this season, traveling across town to take on No. 8 USC (3-2) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Friday's match will count towards the season-long race for the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy, however it will not count in the Pac-10 Standings. UCLA owns a perfect 20-0 record against the Toreros and leads the series with USC, 59-30. Bruins Perfect Thus Far . . .
UCLA has won all seven of its matches this season by 7-0 scores. The closest the Bruins have come to losing a point has been in doubles, where Azusa Pacific, Pacific and UNLV were all able to take one match, however still ended up losing the doubles point.
Gruendler Returns This Week . . .
Sophomore Philipp Gruendler will see his first action in a dual match this Friday when the Bruins travel across town to face No. 8 USC. Gruendler, who owned a 21-4 dual-match record a year ago playing mostly at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, was ruled ineligible for the first eight matches of the season.
Pampoulov, Kohlloeffel Dominating the Competition . . .
Senior Luben Pampoulov and sophomore Benjamin Kohlloeffel, UCLA's top two singles players, have been nearly unbeatable this season. Pampoulov is 19-0 on the season, which includes matches in fall play. Kohlloeffel, the Bruins' only 20-match winner thus far, is 24-3 overall. Between the two of them, they have captured four singles titles and own a combined record of 43-3.
New Rankings Released This Tuesday . . .
UCLA remained at No. 2 in the country in last week's ITA National Team Rankings released on Feb. 1. Defending NCAA Champion Baylor has been the No. 1 ranked team since the preseason. Individually, Benjamin Kohlloeffel is ranked No. 8, followed by No. 14 Luben Pampoulov, No. 39 Alberto Francis, No. 62 Chris Lam and No. 99 Kris Kwinta. In doubles, Francis and Kwinta check in at No. 6. New team rankings will be released on Feb. 8. New individual rankings will not be released again until Feb. 22.
Bruins Gearing Up For USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
The 2005 USTA/ITA National Team Indoors, presented by DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary, showcases 16 of the top Division-I NCAA men's tennis teams. This year's tournament features Stanford, Florida, Georgia, Baylor, UCLA, and Illinois to name a few. Hosted by the University of Illinois, the tournament is making its first appearance in Chicago and will take place from Feb. 17-20 at the Mid-Town Tennis Club.
Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
The 1996 ITA National Coach of the Year and UCLA's 1975 NCAA singles champion, Billy Martin, owns a 260-50 (.839) overall record and is currently in his 12th season as head coach at UCLA. During his time as the Bruins' mentor, Martin has continued to uphold the tradition of excellence established by a men's tennis program which has claimed 15 national titles. In 11 season's as head coach at UCLA, Martin has guided the Bruins to the national title match three times. Additionally, he has never had a team finish out of the top five at the NCAA Championships.
