LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team clinched a share of its third Pac-10 title in a row Friday, defeating cross-town rival USC, 4-3 at the Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of USC. The Bruins end the regular season with a 17-5 overall record, including a 6-1 mark in conference play. USC falls to 8-14 overall and 1-6 in the Pac-10. USC maintains control of the Lexus Gauntlet Cup with a 57.5 to 22.5 lead.
UCLA's second-ranked duo of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel set a new school record with their 20th-consecutive dual match doubles victory Friday, besting the old mark of 19 set by Pat Galbraith and Brian Garrow in 1989. The record almost didn't happen however, as Gruendler and Kohlloeffel had to fight off four match points to eventually down 32nd-ranked Jamil Al-Agba/Dejan Cvetkovic, 9-8(6) at court No. 1. That win also clinched the doubles point for the Bruins, as Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol had already defeated 59th-ranked Jeff Kazarian/Kaes Van't Hof, 8-6 at court No. 2.
UCLA maintained control of the match in singles play as well, posting three straight-set wins to take an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Surapol, ranked 71st nationally, downed Garrett Snyder, 6-1, 6-0 at court No. 5. That victory was followed by Gruendler, who had little trouble with Chong Wang at court No. 4, winning 6-4, 6-0. The match was clinched at court No. 1, where Kohlloeffel was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Cvetkovic. Kohlloeffel is the top-ranked college player in the country.
With the dual match already decided, the Trojans posted wins at court Nos. 2, 3 and 6.
Both teams will now turn their focus to the Pac-10 Championships, Apr. 27-30 in Ojai, Calif. NCAA Tournament selections will be announced on May 3. UCLA will likely be selected to host early-round action at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, May 13 and 14.
