Box Score

Los Angeles, Calif. - Arizona State moved into second place in the Pac-10 standings with a 70-57 decision over host UCLA. Forward Cian Carvalho led five Sun Devils in double figures with 13 points. ASU, ranked 23rd in the nation, made 16 of its 20 shot attempts from the field in the second half to thwart any Bruin hopes of an upset.

The Sun Devils connected on five of their last six shots of the first half while outscoring UCLA 13-3 to end the half with a 30-21 advantage. UCLA had led 18-17 at the 6:20 mark of the first half before ASU went on its run. Arizona State continued its hot shooting to start the second half and made 11 of its first 13 shots in the period while building up a 55-42 lead with 7:34 to play. The Bruin never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Forward Betsy Boardman added 12 points for Arizona State. Amanda Levens, the Pac-10's leading scorer at 20 points a game, was hampered by a sprained ankle and scored 11 points in her first action since the injury. Carrie Buckner and Melody Johnson had 10 points each for Arizona State, who won its fourth straight game and upped its overall record to 15-4. With the Sun Devil win and a USC loss, ASU moves to 6-2 in the Pac-10 and takes sole possession of second place in the league.

The Bruins (5-11 overall, 2-6 Pac-10) were led by sophomore forward Whitney Jones, who scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior center Malika Leatham added 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

"We played a good game overall," said Bruin head coach Kathy Olivier. "We had good energy and responded well to playing one of the nation's best teams. I thought Jamila Veasley really ignited us. At times, she was all over the floor. There is a reason ASU is a ranked team. They came up with big shots at crucial times after we chipped away at their lead."

"UCLA's defense clogs up the paint," said ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne. "We settled for the perimeter shot in the first half. In the second half, we worked harder to get our inside game going. We did not rush our shots and did a much better job of getting a good shot."

UCLA will host Arizona on Saturday at 4 p.m in Pauley Pavilion. ASU will play at USC on Saturday, also at 4 p.m.
