COLUMBIA, MO - UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman has been named NFCA/Diamond Sports Division I Catcher of the Year for 1999. Nuveman, who is also a member of Team USA's Gold Medal squad at the recent Pan American Games, is one of seven catchers honored by Diamond Sports, the NFCA's Official Protective Equipment.
Only a sophomore, Nuveman led the Bruins in batting (.429), home runs (31) and runs batted in (91) in 1999, breaking the NCAA record for slugging percentage at 1.016. A finalist for the Honda Award, Nuveman broke the UCLA career home run record earlier in the season and now has 51 in only two seasons of collegiate action. She is on pace to break the NCAA career home run record of 87.
Nuveman was named Pac-10 Player of the Year and a first-team All-American after leading the Bruins to the NCAA Championship, UCLA's ninth overall. In addition, she is the reigning Pac-10 batting champion.
