UCLA Gymnastics Team Ranked Pre-Season No. 1

Dec. 8, 2003

Defending NCAA Women's Gymnastics Champion UCLA was voted pre-season No. 1 for the fourth consecutive year in a pre-season vote by coaches. The Bruins received 27 of 38 first-place votes.

Head coach Valorie Kondos Field returns four All-Americans from last year's NCAA, Regional and Pac-10 championship squad, including 2003 NCAA bars and beam champion Kate Richardson; four-time NCAA champion Jamie Dantzscher; 2003 Team MVP and West Region Gymnast of the Year Jeanette Antolin; and seven-time All-American and 2001 NCAA bars champion Yvonne Tousek. Also returning to competition is 2000 Olympian and All-American Kristen Maloney, who has sat out the last two seasons due to injury. Among the freshmen joining the squad in 2004 are two-time World Championships competitor Ashley Peckett and former U.S. National Team member Lori Winn.

UCLA will face 11 of the Top 25 teams in the polls this season, including three of the Top 5 and six of the Top 10. The Bruins open the season at home against No. 4 Utah on Jan. 10. Other top 5 matchups are on the road against No. 2 Georgia on Jan. 19 and at home against No. 5 Michigan on Mar. 7. UCLA will also compete against No. 6 Stanford (Feb. 8), No. 7 Florida (Mar. 12), No. 9 Arizona State (Feb. 1), No. 11 Oregon State (Feb. 22), No. 15 Washington (Feb. 27), No. 17 Arizona (Jan. 16), No. 21 California (Feb. 13) and No. 22 Minnesota (Jan. 25).
