National Collegiate Championships: The UCLA Bruins (21-9 overall, 6-3 MPSF) finished second at the Southern California Western Regional Qualification Tournament this past weekend, earning an automatic berth to the Collegiate Championships. The Bruins will travel to UC Davis on May 7-9 to try and contend for their fourth straight national title. Last year, the Bruins defeated California 7-3 in the title game.
On Friday, May 7, the fourth-seeded Bruins meet #13 Maryland for a 10:30 am matchup, which will be held at Solono College in Suisun. UCLA currently holds a 4-0 all-time record over the Terrapins, having most recently defeated Maryland 15-1 at last year's National Collegiate Championships.
Further matchups will be determined by the results of Friday's morning games in this round-robin style competition.
Bruin Notes: At the Southern California Western Regional Qualifying Tournament this past weekend, the Bruins went 3-1, finishing second behind top-ranked USC. On Saturday, April 24, UCLA defeated the San Diego State Aztecs 9-6. Six different players tallied points for UCLA. Later that day, UCLA fell to the rival Trojans, recording an 11-1 loss. Senior Katie Tenenbaum (Merced) recorded the Bruins' only goal of the game.
The following day, the Bruins dominated Long Beach State 12-5. Seven different Bruins tallied points for UCLA. That same day, UCLA met with San Diego State for the second time in the Tournament, posting a 9-2 victory over the Aztecs. Freshman Elaine Zivich (Lompoc) notched a match-high four goals.
Zivich is currently leading her team with 55 goals. The 5-11 attacker has scored in all but two of UCLA's 30 games this season. This past weekend, she fired in a team-high seven goals. Zivich is followed by sophomore Kristin Guerin (Los Alamitos) who has tallied 30 goals this season. Over the weekend, the 5-6 playmaker notched four points.
Celebrating Women's Athletics: The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. "A Celebration of Champions" dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.
