LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team completed a 2-0 week on Friday evening in Pauley Pavilion with a sweep of Oregon. Game scores were 30-20, 30-21, 36-34. With the win, the Bruins improve to 10-2 (2-1 Pac-10), while the Ducks fall to 3-9 (0-3 Pac-10).
UCLA opened an early 3-1 lead in game one and never looked back. The Bruins put together two separate four-point scoring runs to take a 20-10 lead and were able to close out the game by that same 10-point margin at 30-20. In that opening game, the Bruins hit .405 as a team and were led by Cira Wright and Brynn Murphy who had five kills apiece. Wright added two solo blocks and a block assist to her kill total.
In game two, the teams were tied as late as 12-12 before UCLA took the lead for good on a touch-shot kill by freshman Colby Lyman. From there, Natalie Ray served the Bruins to a four-point run and UCLA never looked back, eventually winning the game 30-21. Wright was once again the offensive leader for the Bruins, downing seven kills on as many attempts in the game, helping to send UCLA to the locker rooms with a two games to none advantage.
Oregon opened game three with a four-point run, but the Bruins came back to tie the match at 5-5. From there, Oregon took a slim lead, but UCLA came back to tie at eight and nine points before extending a three-point lead as late as 16-13. The Ducks came back again, tying the match at 16, 17, 18, 20, 21 and 22 before extending a four-point lead of their own as late as 28-24. However, the Bruins fought back and closed the gap to one point at 28-27 before a Jaclyn Jones kill gave Oregon the first of their six game points at 29-28, but Oregon was unable to convert as the jump serve by Heather Madison was well wide of the Bruin side of the court.
UCLA followed with a block by Krystal McFarland and Brynn Murphy to tie the game at 29-29, the first of six ties down the stretch to the finish. Oregon used a Jaclyn Jones kill to earn their third game point, but Brynn Murphy re-tied the score for the Bruinw with a kill. Sarah Mason countered for Oregon before Murphy again tied the score for the Bruins. A Heather Cullen kill gave UCLA its first match point at 32-31, but Mason extended the game with a kill of her own, and a Bruin attack error gave the Ducks their fifth game point.
Setter Krystal McFarland then dumped in her fifth kill of the night to tie the match at 33-33 and went back to the service line before Mason gave the Ducks their sixth and final game point of the evening. UCLA responded with a kill from Heather Cullen that was followed by the 13th and 14th kills of the evening by Cira Wright to close out the 3-0 win with a dramatic 36-34 final game score.
Wright led all players with 20 points, comprised of 14 kills, a career-high three service aces, two solo blocks and two block assists. Murphy and Cullen each had 15 kills in the match with solid attack percentages of .333 and .462, respectively. McFarland added three service aces of her own, while Bruin junior libero Chrissie Zartman contributed a match-high 16 digs.
UCLA returns to action on Thursday evening, October 2, for a 7 pm match in Pullman, WA, against Washington State. The match will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by FOX Sports Net, but air times have not yet been announced. Following the Oct. 2 match in Pullman, the Bruins will travel to Seattle, WA, for a Friday evening match against the Washington Huskies on Oct. 3.
