Three UCLA men's throwers will compete in the shot put this weekend at the 2003 USA Indoor T & F Championships in Boston, MA. The meet will be held Friday-Sunday (Feb. 28-March 2) at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College. The shot put competition will be held Sunday (March 2). Wiegand (Arcadia HS) last weekend won the shot put at the 2003 MPSF Indoor Championships in Boise, ID. His winning mark of 65-3.25 was an NCAA automatic indoor qualifying mark, a personal-best and No. 7 in school history. As a junior in 2002 outdoor competition, Wiegand won the Pac-10 shot put title and earned All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor.
Ames (Lakeside/El Capitan) at the MPSF Championships won the 35lb. weight throw (67-9.25) and placed second in the shot put (64-8.75, NCAA automatic qualifier, personal-best, No. 9 in school history). As a sophomore at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor, Ames earned All-American status in both the shot put and discus.
On the 2003 NCAA indoor shot put chart, Wiegand is No. 4 and Ames is No. 5.
Outdoors, the Bruins will host their first home meet of the 2003 season at Drake Stadium on Saturday, March 1, with CS Fullerton, CS Los Angeles, and Cal-Poly Pomona. The hammer throws will start at 9 a.m., followed by the rest of the field events at 11 a.m. and the running events at 12:30 p.m. The meet will conclude at 3:55 p.m. with the running of the 4 X 400m relays.
Indoors, Bruin athletes with qualifying marks will compete at the 2003 NCAA Indoor T & F Championships, March 14-15 in Fayetteville, AR (hosted by the University of Arkansas).
