LOS ANGELES - The No. 1-ranked UCLA men's tennis team has been selected as the top seed in next week's USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Louisville, Ky. Stanford and UCLA have claimed the last 13 National Team Indoor titles.
The tournament, which usually serves as a sneak preview to the season-ending NCAA Championships in May, began in 1973 and is being hosted by the University of Kentucky at the Louisville Tennis Club for the 17th time since 1985.
Joining host Kentucky and UCLA are: Arkansas, Baylor, California, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Harvard, Illinois, Mississippi, San Diego State, Stanford, Texas A&M, Texas and USC. Thirteen of the 16 participating teams were ranked in the top-13 of the preseason Omni Hotels national rankings.
Stanford and the rest of the Pac-10 have dominated play at this event as four different West Coast schools (Stanford, UCLA, California and Southern California) have won the title every year since 1987. UCLA's seven titles are second only to Stanford's 12 at this tournament. In fact, only three times has a school outside the state of California won this tournament since its inception in 1973 (all three were from the state of Texas).
