LOS ANGELES - The 15th-seeded UCLA women's volleyball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night with a 30-28, 30-23, 27-30, 30-22 victory over Loyola Marymount (17-12) in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins (19-10) were led by Brynn Murphy who had 19 kills and hit .474 in the match, while senior libero Chrissie Zartman had 31 digs. UCLA advances to play Long Beach State on Saturday night at 7 pm in Pauley Pavilion.
The Bruin and Lions played a close game to open the match. The Bruins held a 20-15 lead before the Lions crept back to tie the game at 27-27 and then 28-28 before an LMU attack error and a Becky Green kill sealed the 30-28 opening game victory for the Bruins. Murphy led UCLA in that game recording five kills on an error-free 10 swings.
In game two, the Bruins scored the first three points and never looked back. UCLA hit .364 as a team with Brittany Ringel and Murphy recording five kills apiece. Nana Meriwether recorded three of her 11 blocks in the game, while Zartman tallied eight digs in game two.
After the break, Loyola Marymount scored the first four points of the game, and held the lead until the 12-12 mark when UCLA used kills by Murphy and Meriwether to come pull even with the Lions. LMU would re-take the lead from the 15-15 mark, scoring three straight points before a Nancy Barba kill broke the scoring streak by LMU. The game would be tied as late as 26-26 before Loyola Marymount took the lead for the final time. The Lions scored four of the final five points in the game to take game three by a score of 30-27.
In game four, UCLA took an early 17-9 lead and was able to put away the match with a 30-22 fourth game victory. In that final stanza, Murphy was once again outstanding, recording seven kills on an error-free 16 swings. Meriwether recorded five blocks in the game as UCLA closed out the contest and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
For the match, Murphy was one of three Bruins with double-figure kills, leading the way with 19. Brittany Ringle followed with 15 kills in the contest, while Nana Meriwether double-doubled with 11 kills and 11 blocks in the match. Chrissie Zartman continued her streak of double-figure dig matches, recording an impressive 31 digs in the match.
UCLA advances to the second round of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament, and will play Long Beach State at 7 pm on Saturday night in Pauley Pavilion.
