Release:  12/29/2004

Dec. 29, 2004

UCLA junior quarterback Drew Olson will undergo surgery on his left knee, it was announced today.

Olson injured the knee in the second quarter of last Thursday's Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl. Results of an MRI showed tears in the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in Olson's left knee.

Olson will have the surgery in the next few weeks and his status for the start of Fall camp (early August) is uncertain at this time.

"I feel badly for Drew," said head coach Karl Dorrell. "He is a great young man and one of our team leaders.

"Drew is a tough competitor. If anyone can overcome a setback like this, it is Drew Olson."

In 2004, Olson started all 12 games and completed 196 of 341 passes (57.5%) for 2,565 yards, 20 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. His 20 TD passes rank fifth on UCLA's single-season list, his 196 completions also rank fifth and his 2,565 yards rank seventh.

Olson, who has never redshirted, also ranks fourth in career completions (422), fifth in passing yards (5,334) and sixth (tied) in touchdown passes (33).
