UCLA vs. Fresno State - UCLA meets regional rival Fresno State (1-0) Sunday, Sept. 13 at UCLA's North Athletic Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 pm. The Bruins will look to increase their all-time record against the Bulldogs to 12-8- 3. UCLA won the last meeting 2-0 at home last season behind goals from Seth George and Pete Vagenas.
Bruins Unstoppable at Home - UCLA has won 23 consecutive home contests, the longest active streak in the NCAA. The Bruins' 19 consecutive regular season home victories rank 11th all-time. A win over Fresno State Sunday would put UCLA in a tie for 10th all-time with 20.
UCLA Loses First Game of 98 Season - The Bruins' 12-game winning streak was snapped Sunday in a 2-1 loss at No. 8 South Carolina. The Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead into halftime until sophomore forward McKinley Tennyson, Jr. tied it up in the 57th minute. But less than two minutes later, South Carolina's Nathan Watkins beat Bruin keeper Nick Rimando from 10 yards out for the winning goal. The win gave South Carolina head coach Mark Berson his 300th career victory. UCLA head coach Sigi Schmid has 306 career wins.
Bruins Reunite with Will Daniel - UCLA's inspiration in the 1997 NCAA Championship game, Will Daniel, reunited with the team in South Carolina. Daniel and his mother Pat, UCLA's hosts in Richmond, Va. for last year's Final Four, made the trip to Columbia to see the Bruins in their first East Coast game since the Championships last December.
Offense Explodes in 7-0 Win Against CSDH - Junior midfielder Pete Vagenas and Tennyson, Jr scored two goals apiece in UCLA's 7-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills last Tuesday. Senior forward Seth George scored the game-winner, and junior defender Adam Cooper scored his first career goal. Sophomore midfielder Shaun Tsakiris rounded out the scoring with his first of the season. Goalkeepers Rimando (2 saves) and Kevin Perrault shared the shutout.
Victorine Makes up for Lost Time - Oft-injured Sasha Victorine (Corona, CA) has returned with a vengeance in 1998. In his first game back from last year's ACL injury, the junior midfielder and Hermann Trophy candidate totaled three assists and played all 90 minutes of UCLA's 7-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. Victorine played most of 1996 with a separated shoulder.
Tennyson Continues Scoring Streak - With two goals against Cal State Dominguez Hills and a goal against South Carolina, McKinley Tennyson, Jr. (Indianapolis, IN) has scored a goal or assist in his last four games and five of his last six, dating back to last season. Tennyson leads the team with three goals and six points.
George's 100 Point Watch - Forward Seth George (Mission Viejo, CA) needs just nine more points to reach the 100 point mark in his career. George, who has one goal and two assists in 1998, has 91 career points (35 goals, 21 assists). He needs just five points, three goals and six assists to crack into UCLA's Top 10 lists for those categories.
