LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team started its weekend series with a win on Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion, defeating Oregon State 3-1. Game scores were 30-20, 29-31, 30-24, 30-24. Three Bruins downed double-figure kills on the evening, including Heather Cullen with 14, Brynn Murphy with 13 and Colby Lyman with 12.
The Bruins opened with an impressive first game, hitting .364 as a team in the 30-20 victory. UCLA never trailed in the game, and capitalized on a three-point scoring run behind the service of setter Krystal McFarland and a five-point run with Heather Cullen at the line to extend an early 16-6 lead. Oregon State was able to close the gap, but never really threatened in the game.
In game two, the Beavers took an early 2-0 lead and fought hard throughout. UCLA built a 24-21 lead late in the game on a three-point run with Becky Green at the service line, followed by a three-point run behind the service of fellow freshman Laura Kroneberger, but OSU stormed back, putting together scoring runs of their own to tie the game at 28-28. The Beavers Katelyn Healy served for the game at 29-28, but a Heather Cullen kill re-tied the score at 29-29 before a Karah Roades kill and a Bruin attack error sent the teams to the locker rooms tied at one game apiece.
The teams battled back and forth coming out of the locker room, and Oregon State extended a 10-6 lead with setter Desma Stovall at the service line for six straight points. The Bruins came back with a four-point run of their own to tie the score at 10-10, lost the lead again at 12-11, but scored four straight to go up 14-12 before a Rhoades kill and a Bruin attack error tied the score at 14-14. The match was tied again at 15-15 before the Bruins started to extend a lead behind the service of Becky Green, extending an 18-16 lead. UCLA would not give up that lead for the rest of the game, finishing off game three with a block by Brynn Murphy and Colby Lyman for the 30-24 win
Game four was similar, with the Beavers within two points of the Bruins as late as 19-17, but UCLA was able to put together a late five-point run to extend a 24-18 lead and never looked back, closing out the match with a 30-24 game four victory to win the match 3-1.
UCLA out-blocked the Beavers by an impressive 17-8 margin, and was led at the net by Cira Wright, who had eight blocks in the match (2 BS, 6 BA). Colby Lyman was also very active on the block with three solo blocks and three block assists of her own. Lyman led all players with 18.5 points in the match, recording 12 kills, two aces, and three blocks, while UCLA had a total of five players with double-figure points on the evening. Lyman also led the Bruins in digs with 16, followed by junior libero Chrissie Zartman who had 14 and Cullen with 11.
UCLA returns to action on Friday night with a 7 pm match against Oregon in Pauley Pavilion.
