UCLA Hosts #23 Arizona State and Arizona In Pauley - The Bruins will host 23rd-ranked Arizona State (14-4, 5-2) on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins host Arizona (7-9, 3-4) at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Wildcats will play at USC on Thursday.

Arizona State is led by senior guard Amanda Levens who leads the Pac-10 with a 20.2 ppg scoring average. Senior center Melody Johnson averages 11.7 points and 6.2 rebounds.

UCLA leads the all-time series with Arizona State by a 35-11 count. The Sun Devils captured both meetings last season, winning 78-60 in Tempe and 78-68 in Pauley.

UCLA leads the series with Arizona by a margin of 34-12. Each team won on its home floor last season. UCLA won 59-56 in overtime in Pauley and the Wildcats won 89-79 in Tucson. Elizabeth Pickney, a 6-4 senior center, leads Arizona and ranks fifth in the Pac-10 in scoring (16.5) and rebounding (8.1).

The Bruins have added Brittany Ringel, a 6-1 freshman forward from Arlington, TX (Trinity Valley HS) to the roster. She began practice with the team on Jan. 8. Ringel is also a member of the UCLA volleyball team and played a reserve role at the outside hitter position this past season. She was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for volleyball in the state of Texas following her senior season in high school. Ringel was a four-year letterwinner in basketball in high school, scoring 2,018 career points.

Radio/TV - Thursday's game will be broadcast live on KACD 850 am (Thousand Oaks) and KEWS 1340 am (Riverside), and Saturday's game will be heard on Fox Sports 1150am. Both games will be on the internet at www.uclabruins.com.

Allen to Sit Out the Arizona State contest - After being ejected from the USC game for a flagrant technical foul (double technical foul) for fighting, senior forward Shalada Allen was ejected from the USC game. According to NCAA rules, Allen must sit out the Bruins' next game against Arizona State.

Greco To Sit Out Rest of Season - It was announced on Wednesday, December 12 that Bruin leading scorer Michelle Greco will not participate for the remainder of the current season for medical reasons. Due to a history of mild concussions during her sophomore and junior year, the UCLA Medical Staff believes that Greco should take a year off from competition. At the conclusion of the 2001-02 season, UCLA will submit a medical hardship petition to the Pacific-10 Conference with the hope that Greco will be granted another year of collegiate eligibility.

Porter To Pursue Professional Volleyball Opportunities - Junior forward Kristee Porter has left UCLA (as of Jan. 4) to pursue professional and U.S. national team opportunities in volleyball. Porter averaged 11.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in five games with the Bruins. She joined the team after volleyball season Dec. 8 and scored nine points with five rebounds in her final game at Cal, Dec. 30. Porter's season-best total was 20 points against Oregon State on Dec. 22. Porter, the UCLA and Pac-10 career kills record-holder, was a two-time volleyball All-American and the 2000 Volleyball Magazine Player of the Year.

UCLA In The Pac-10 Rankings - For the second consecutive year, the Bruins lead the Pac-10 Conference in steals, averaging 10.47 steals a game. UCLA also leads in turnover margin, with a +5.53 margin, and ranks second in offensive rebounds (16.40). Individually, Natalie Nakase ranks third in assists (5.27), fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.76), seventh in steals (1.87) and eighth in free throw percentage (.782). Malika Leatham ranks eighth in rebounding (6.5).

2001-02 Game Recaps

Bruins Drop Decision to USC - USC handed the Bruins a 67-57 loss in Pauley before a crowd of 5,331. The Trojans used a 23-8 run to close out the first half and take a 43-23 halftime lead. The Bruins never got closer than nine points. Natalie Nakase led UCLA with 21 points. Shalada Allen added 12 points and a career-best nine rebounds.

Bruins Rally for Road Win at Washington State - UCLA used career-highs from Natalie Nakase (24 points) and Shalada Allen (16 points) to help rally from a 34-27 halftime deficit to best the Cougars in Pullman. The Bruins were trailing 55-46 at the 11 minute mark before going on a 9-0 run to tie the score.
