What is it like to walk through the tailgating crowd at the Rose Bowl before a home game with your team on game day? I am sure that it will be wild this Saturday vs. USC. Good luck and have fun. And, of course, BEAT SC!
"Well, I think it really gives us a lot of excitement and creates an adrenaline that we feed off of. It shows that there are so many people interested in our football team and we appreciate it very much. I hope to see a lot of people this Saturday to get us ready for USC."
Marcus Thompson (Palm Desert, CA)
What are some of the things you enjoy doing in the offseason? I know that a lot of the year you are either coaching, recruiting or at least doing something football related. I guess my question is, what is one thing you do that totally removes you from the game of football?
"The things I enjoy the most are playing golf with my friends and going fishing. I went Salmon fishing in Alaska last year. But I'd definitely say those two things are releases for me."
Lee Flowers (Long Beach, CA)
Would you say the USC vs. UCLA rivalry is a heated one? I know that both teams really want to win, however with so many players on both teams that know each other and with coaches that have worked together, is there any hatred involved?
"I don't know if there is hatred as much as it's just a very intense rivalry. I've had the opportunity to coach in the Texas vs. Texas A&M game. To me that was the Hatfield & McCoy game and a game of hatred. This is more of an intense, inter-city rivalry where everyone knows each other and they have to live in this city 365 days a year with each other."
Mason Peterson (San Diego, CA)
Is there any team in the country that you would really like to play, but haven't gotten the chance to face? Like say, Florida State, Nebraska or maybe even a Colorado? I will give UCLA credit, you have played a lot of the top teams in recent years (Michigan, Ohio State, Miami, Alabama, etc.).
"As a football coach, I've had the opportunity to play Florida State in the Cotton Bowl, Nebraska during the regular season and Colorado five times when I was at Oregon. I've had the opportunity to play against those teams, but just not as a head coach. But my biggest thing is to just be able to win the Pac-10 and compete for a national championship. Hopefully we'll be able to do that in the coming years."
