Alumnae Enjoy Season-Opening Softball Event

Jan. 26, 2002

LOS ANGELES - The 2002 UCLA Softball Alumnae Game took place in front of a standing room only crowd on Saturday afternoon at Easton Stadium, with two teams of current Bruins and softball alumnae squaring off for a six-inning game.

Former All-American Lisa Longaker, a 2001 inductee of the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, threw out the first pitch. The teams played four traditional innings with no score, as current Bruin pitchers Amanda Freed (Gold) and Keira Goerl (Blue) dominated from the pitching circle. Alumnae B'Ann Burns (Gold) and Courtney Dale (Blue) completed the pitching duties for their respective teams.

In the top of the fifth, Blue started the inning with a runner at first base (similar to the current international tie breaker rule). That runner, freshman Allison Chislock, would advance to third base, with current assistant coach Kelly Inouye-Perez at the plate. Inouye-Perez hit a rope to center field, scoring Chislock for the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly

The fun continued in the bottom half of the inning as, with two Gold runners on third base, current UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman hit a two-RBI sacrifice fly to tie the game.

In the top of the sixth, current junior Tairia Mims hit an eight-run grand slam, as the inning started with one Blue runner on each base, and four more Blue team members joining the trot around the bases for the sheer fun of it. Mims' slam was essentially the only way to reach base as the entire Gold team (approximately 15 players) took the field on defense.

UCLA opens its 2002 season on Friday, February 1, with a 1 pm first pitch against Louisiana-Monroe at Easton Stadium.
