UCLA sophomore forward Maxwell Griffin (Palmdale, Calif.) has been selected the College Soccer News National Player of the Week, as well as the Pac-10 Player of the Week for the second-straight week after leading UCLA to a pair of wins over Top 10 opponents Santa Clara and San Francisco. He and senior goalkeeper Eric Reed (Mission Viejo, Calif.) were named to CSN's Team of the Week.
Griffin scored the game's first goal and then assisted on a second UCLA goal just 19 seconds later in the Bruins' 2-1 win over seventh-ranked Santa Clara on Friday. On Sunday, which happened to be his 19th birthday, Griffin scored the game-winning goal in the 17th minute to lead UCLA to a 2-0 win over eighth-ranked San Francisco.
Griffin, who was also selected to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week, has scored five goals and one assist in his last six games and leads the team in scoring with 11 points, already surpassing his total from last year.
Reed set a new career high with seven saves in the Bruins' win over Santa Clara and followed that performance by recording a shutout with two saves against San Francisco.
With the two victories over the weekend, UCLA jumped up seven spots to No. 9 in the Soccer America rankings.
