Oct. 31, 2004

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UCLA senior Josh Hewko turned in his second hat trick of the season as the No. 1 Bruin water polo team extended its winning streak to 13 matches with a 11-6 victory over No. 9 Long Beach State Sunday afternoon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. With the win the Bruins improved to 18-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play.

UCLA, who never trailed in the match, scored five first quarter goals and never looked back. After junior Michael March netted the first of the Bruins' eleven goals at 4:45 in the first, Long Beach State's Reid Tomassi capitalized on a 6-on-5 advantage for the 49ers first score of the game. It was all UCLA after that. Hewko scored the first of his three goals with :07 remaining in the first to give the Bruins a 5-2 advantage. He would then open the scoring in the second quarter at 6:31 with a narrow-angled shot past 49er goalkeeper Thomas Onyshko.

Long Beach would eventually go on to convert five of eight 6-on-5 advantages and one of two four-meter shots for their six goals. Tomassi and Brett McCleave each scored twice for the 49ers.

In all, seven different Bruins scored goals. Senior Brett Ormsby's two goals accounted for his 50th and 51st of the season after he was held scoreless on Saturday for the first time in his four-year career.

UCLA goalkeeper Joseph Axelrad continued his stellar play with another seven saves. Against Stanford on Saturday, the senior registered 14 saves, including his 300th career.

UCLA's 13 match winning streak is its seventh longest in school history and most extensive since 1995-1996 when the Bruins pieced together 15 wins in a row... The Bruins also own a 14-match home winning streak.
