The UCLA women track and field team had a strong first day at the MPSF Indoor Championships on Friday in Seattle, WA as several Bruins picked up NCAA Championship qualifying marks and advanced to the finals in their respective events on Saturday.
In the women's competition, junior Dawn Harper was the top qualifier for tomorrow's final in the 60m hurdles with a provisional time of 8.16 (just .10 off her season-best 8.15), while senior Lara Saye threw a lifetime-best and provisional qualifying mark of 62-4.50 to finish second in the weight throw. In the 5000m, freshmen Monika Rothenburger (17:02.92) and Olga Aulet-Leon (17:03.94), competing in their first indoor competition as Bruins, placed second and third respectively.
Junior Chelsea Johnson, the 2005 NCAA Outdoor pole vault champion and record holder (15-0), returned to competition after suffering a strained hamstring earlier in the season to finish sixth with a jump of 12-10.25. Junior Jacqueline Nguyen placed ninth with a jump of 12-4.50.
Competition continues on Saturday with the finals of all running events, 4x400m relay and the following field events: men and women's high jump, men and women's triple jump, men and wonen's shot put and the men's pole vault.
