FLORIDA STATE HEAD COACH JoANNE GRAF
"It was obviously a tough, tough opening game. I thought the first couple of innings were key for us. I was a little concerned when we let them score right away that they might try to break it open. I know Leslie did a great job keeping them off balance and our defense played really well. We had a couple of opportunities early to move runners over and maybe score another run and we didn't quite do it. I had a lot of confidence that the longer the game went the better chance we would have of upsetting them. I think the kids came through. Big, big hit by Mo (Monique Marier) with the big home run that really propelled us and good defense at the end that pulled us through the game."
On Marier's diving catch to end the game:
"We work on diving catches with Mo almost everyday in practice and we always say if Mo dives and catches it practice is over."
FLORIDA STATE SENIOR MONIQUE MARIER
On hitting the game-winning home run:
"I guess I just keyed in after taking a good cut at the high rise ball. When I was running to first I thought it was going to go foul and I was like, `oh nuts.'"
FLORIDA STATE SENIOR LESLIE MALERICH
On her pitching performance:
"I wasn't nervous and I think that's what was running through my mind just like regionals. Knowing that they were an excellent team and that they can pull through anything, I just knew I had to hit my spots. I had confidence with the curve ball and confidence in my pitches so I really couldn't question what I could do because I don't have control after the pitch."
On the condition of her arm:
"It's a little tired but it's getting there. I rubbed it out yesterday and we're going to do a little bit of a longer rub out tonight. It's definitely getting better but, at the same time, with it being tired I know I'm not overthrowing myself. I'm just putting the ball where it needs to go and my teammates are helping me out."
FLORIDA STATE JUNIOR BRANDI STUART
On the game:
"We came into the game not even thinking about us being the eight seed and UCLA being the number one seed. We're just two teams with names and mascots just trying to win a ballgame."
UCLA HEAD COACH SUE ENQUIST
"It's just disappointing that we didn't capitalize on the opportunities that we had. I tip my cap to Florida State. They did a terrific job of competing throughout the whole game. And that's really what it's about once you get to this point because you can't size people up on paper and try to figure out who is supposed to win. You have to go out there and get it done. We weren't timely with our hitting."
On Florida State's Monique Marier's game-ending diving catch:
"She made the catch of her life. She showed great athleticism so I tip my cap to her. I know a lot of fielders would play it safe and just go for the out on the second runner that was in scoring position."
On UCLA pitcher Keira Goerl:
"It was unfortunate for Keira. I felt like she did a great job in the circle. We force her to be perfect today so she only lets one go and we come up on the short end of the stick."
UCLA JUNIOR SHORTSTOP NATASHA WATLEY
On if she was frustrated about getting on base and not being able to score: "I just knew that I had to be the lead-off and that I had to do my part for our team. I was doing anything that I could to get on base. I guess the timing just wasn't there and that happens sometimes."
