No. 3 Bruins Return to Action March 27

The UCLA Women's Water Polo team lost to No. 1 USC on March 11, but picked up a pair of victories at UC San Diego on Saturday, March 13. It was the Bruins second meeting this season with USC and after falling behind 4-1 in the first period UCLA could not recover, losing 9-4. However, UCLA would rebound with a 11-2 win over UC San Diego and a 9-8 victory over Princeton in La Jolla, California. The Bruins will take an extended break from action before heading to Hawaii for the Rainbow Classic on March 27-28.

WEEKLY RECAP: USC, MARCH 11, 2004: LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The UCLA Women's Water Polo team lost to No. 1 USC today 9-4 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match. The Bruins fell behind 4-1 in the first period and after cutting the lead to 5-2 at halftime were poised to make a run in the second half. But, USC would answer back in the third and fourth periods outscoring UCLA 4-2. Katherine Belden led the Bruins with 2 goals and Kacy Kunkel and Molly Cahill scored once.

WEEKLY RECAP: UC SAN DIEGO, MARCH 13, 2004: LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UCLA Women's Water Polo team defeated No. 13 UC San Diego by opening up a 5-0 lead in the first half and never looking back, holding UCSD to two goals in the final two periods while scoring six. Kristina Kunkel and Brittney Bowlus led the Bruins with three goals each, Katherine Belden scored twice and Kelley Koepp, Jenna Murphy and Kacy Kunkel scored once.

WEEKLY RECAP: PRINCETON, MARCH 13, 2004: LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UCLA Women's Water Polo team held off a fourth period Princeton rally to defeat the Tigers 9-8. After jumping out to a 5-2 lead after one half and then extending the lead to 9-5 after the third period it appeared the Bruins had the game in hand. However, Princeton would score three unanswered goals in the fourth period to pull within one with 32 seconds left. The Bruins were then able to hold onto the lead and earn the 9-8 victory. Kristina Kunkel had her second hat trick of the day and Katherine Belden and Molly Cahill scored twice. Jenna Murphy and Brittney Bowlus each added one goal to round out the Bruin scoring effort.

UP NEXT: RAINBOW CLASSIC, MARCH 27-28 AND @ HAWAII, MARCH 30: The Bruins will take a break from action for final exams and will travel to Hawaii for the Rainbow Classic on March 27-28 and an MPSF game against Hawaii on March 30.

BRUIN QUICK FACTS: UCLA has scored 117 goals this year while allowing 69. In ten games freshman goalkeeper Emily Feher has 83 saves and a goals against average of 5.38. In four games her counterpart sophomore Tahlia Kerr has 29 saves and a goals against average of 3.75. After recording two hat tricks on Saturday against UC San Diego and Princeton, sophomore Kristina Kunkel leads the Bruins with 25 goals scored. Sophomore Katherine Belden is second with 20 goals followed by freshman Molly Cahill's 18. UCLA is 1-0 in overtime games this season. Their lone overtime game was a 6-5 victory over California. Sophomore Kristina Kunkel was named the March 2 MPSF Player of the Week and sophomore Lauren Heineck was named the March 9 MPSF Player of the Week. The Bruins have been dominant in the second and third periods outscoring their opponents 59-15.
