The UCLA Bruin swim and dive team stands in 23rd-place after the first day of competition at the NCAA Championships in Athens, GA. Thanks to two relays, the Bruins picked up 10 team points on day one of Nationals.

Arizona, the 2006 Pac-10 Champion, stands in first-place with 161 points, followed by Auburn with 151 and Georgia in third with 147 points.

The 200 Freestyle Relay team of senior Kim Vandenberg, juniosr Katie Arnold and Amy Thurman, and freshman Anna Poteete finished 14th in the Console final in a time of 1:32.36, picking up six points for the Bruins. The 400 Medley Relay team of Arnold, senior Eileen Seissen, Vandenberg and Poteete wrapped up day one with four team points after finishing 15th in the Console final in a time of 3:41.43.

In individual events, junior Katie Nelson was the highest finisher for the Bruins as she placed 19th overall in the 500 Free with a time of 4:47.95. She missed making the Console final by just three spots and less then two seconds.

In the 50 Freestyle, Vandenberg had the highest finish for the Bruins at the 50th spot (23.36), while Poteete was 51st (23.38), Arnold was 56th (23.48) and Thurman was 66th (23.63).

Sophomore Chiemi Yamamoto placed 56th in the 200 Medley in a time of 2:04.04.

In diving action, freshman Marisa Samaniego finished 38th with a score of 222.00.

Competition continues on Friday with the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 3M Diving. Prelims begin at 8:00 am (PST) and finals start at 4:00 pm (PST).
