Axman Leaves Bruin Staff, Cable Named Offensive Coordinator

Release:  02/05/2004

Feb. 5, 2004

UCLA head football coach Karl Dorrell today announced that offensive coordinator Steve Axman will pursue other opportunities and will no longer be a member of the Bruin football staff.

"It became obvious to both of us during our on-going discussions that it would be best for all concerned for Steve to pursue other coaching opportunities," said Dorrell. "I respect Steve's abilities as a coach, but we both came to the realization that this is not the right fit for him."

Dorrell also announced that new offensive line coach Tom Cable, who spent the last four years as head coach at Idaho and who served as offensive coordinator at Colorado in 1999 under Gary Barnett, would assume the offensive coordinator position. He will continue to coach the offensive line.

During Cable's tenure at Idaho, his teams ran the same offensive system utilized by UCLA. During those four years, the Vandals averaged 424.1 yards of total offense (19,510 in 46 games). Idaho ranked sixth nationally in 2001 with 464.8 yards, eighth nationally in 2000 with 453.2 yards and 27th nationally in 2002 with 404.6 yards.

"Tom is well-versed in our offensive system and is extremely familiar with its blocking schemes," said Dorrell. "I expect us to be much improved and much more efficient with Tom at the controls."

Colorado also ran that offense during his year (1999) as coordinator under Gary Barnett. That season, the Buffalo offense ranked 14th in the nation, averaging 424.9 yards per game. Colorado won the Insight.com Bowl that year, scoring 62 points and compiling 523 yards against Boston College.

Dorrell will be looking to hire a quarterbacks coach in the near future.
