Los Angeles - Senior women's tennis player Sara Walker will represent UCLA in singles at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships beginning Thursday at the Riviera Tennis Club. The main draw gets underway tomorrow and concludes on Sunday.
Walker, who received a direct acceptance into the main draw because of her No. 6 singles ranking, will take on a qualifier in Thursday's first round. She is seeded fifth in the 32-player singles draw.
Looking to join Walker in the main draw, Bruin freshman Jackie Carleton won two rounds of pre-qualifying singles over the weekend, however was defeated in the first round of qualifying on Tuesday by Washington's Claire Carter, 6-0, 6-4.
The Bruin doubles tandem of Sarah Gregg and Anya Loncaric also advanced through pre-qualifying over the weekend and won a round of qualifying on Tuesday, defeating Jemina Hayward/Erin Polowski of Boise State, 8-4. Gregg and Loncaric could not pull off the upset in the second round however, falling to fourth-seeded Lindsay Dawaf/Julie Rotondi of Florida, 8-3.
The first Intercollegiate Tennis Association national and singles and doubles championships of the 2002-03 season - the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships - is one of three national collegiate tennis championships this season.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships (its counterpart, the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships, takes place in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the same time), the Nov. 7-10 Omni Hotels/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events during the season.
The premier hard court event of the fall collegiate season, the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships feature the top players in NCAA Division I tennis.
