LOS ANGELES - UCLA's Jean-Julien Rojer won three matches to lead the Netherlands-Antilles to a first round victory over Costa Rica, 3-2 in the Davis Cup.
Rojer, who missed UCLA's dual matches against Georgia Tech (Feb. 9) and Portland (Feb. 13), played superbly in winning two singles and one doubles match. His most impressive performance was a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 victory over Juan-Antonio Marin, who is ranked 117 in the world. Rojer also defeated Rafael Avalos-Brenes in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, Rojer teamed with Elmar Gerth to record a 9-7 victory. The tandem came back after being down two sets to seal the first round victory for the Netherlands-Antilles.
Rojer will join his UCLA teammates on Thursday, Feb. 15 for the National Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash.
