UCLA THIS WEEK: The second-ranked Bruin men's water polo team looks to bounce back from its first conference loss of the 2001 season with two matches this weekend. Saturday, UCLA (9-3, 4-1 MPSF) travels to Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool in Malibu to face No. 3 Pepperdine (12-2, 4-1) at noon. The matchup will break a tie for second place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings.
The Bruins then return to Westwood for the final time this season when they host UC Santa Barbara (6-8, 2-4) at noon on Sunday at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. Seniors Alfonso Tucay (Burbank/Burroughs), Jeff Pflueger (Santa Ana/Foothill), and Jon Puffer (El Segundo) will each make their final appearance before the home crowd.
LAST WEEKEND: The third time was not the charm for UCLA as the team fell to Stanford, 8-3, last Saturday at Avery Aquatics Complex. All three of the Bruins' losses this season have come against the Cardinal (14-0, 6-0).
The 1 vs. 2 matchup was decided early when Stanford jumped out to a 3-1 edge after one quarter and a 5-2 halftime lead. Albert Garcia (So., Long Beach/Wilson) led the Bruins with two power play goals, while Tucay added one score. Freshman driver Brett Ormsby (El Cajon/Valhalla), the Bruins' leading scorer, was shut out on seven shots.
UCLA vs. PEPPERDINE: The Bruins lead the all-time series against Pepperdine 50-25-1, including three victories over the Waves last year and wins in seven of the last eight matches between the teams. UCLA head coach Adam Krikorian has won all five meetings with Pepperdine during his tenure.
The Waves are riding a five-game win streak. The offense is led by senior Greg Lonzo and freshman Jesse Smith, who have 36 and 32 goals, respectively. Junior goalkeeper Michael Soltis carries a season goals-against average of 6.08 into this weekend.
UCLA vs. UCSB: The Bruins have defeated UCSB in 75 of 92 all-time meetings. The Gauchos have played the top teams tough, pushing Pepperdine and USC to overtime and hanging with Stanford for nearly three quarters. But UCSB dropped a key decision yesterday (Sunday), falling behind 6-0 to Long Beach State and losing to the 49ers 10-6. Amit Seker led the Gauchos with three goals in the match.
BRUIN STATS: Ormsby continues to lead UCLA with 24 goals in his first collegiate season, while Tucay increased his goal total to 21 ... All-American goalkeeper Brandon Brooks (Jr., Honolulu, HI/Punahou) saw his GAA rise above 6.00 for the first time this season (6.03).
