UCLA senior Christina Tolson, from Fountain Valley, on Monday was named the Pacific-10 Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her performances at last weekend's Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, CA. It's the second time this season Tolson has won the weekly conference honor.
On Saturday (April 21) in the women's university open hammer throw, Tolson placed first with a Pac-10 and UCLA record mark of 214-6 (personal-best, No. 2 on the current U. S. college chart, NCAA automatic qualifying mark). Tolson set the Pac-10 women's hammer throw record last year (208-11). Then on Sunday (April 22) at Mt SAC in the invitational shot put, Tolson placed fourth overall (top placing collegian), with a personal-best effort of 57-2 (U. S. collegiate leader, No. 5 in UCLA history, NCAA automatic qualifier).
Tolson's first weekly conference honor was on April 9 at the Texas Relays, where she won the women's shot put (56-1 1/4) and was second in the women's hammer throw (207-11).
Looking ahead to this weekend (April 28-29), the UCLA women sprinters and hurdlers will travel to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays. The remaining Bruin women and most of the UCLA men's team will compete in the Cal/Nevada Championships, hosted by UC Irvine.
