Bruins Blast Trojans, 13-7

March 28, 2004

Box Score

For the first time in the last 12 attempts, UCLA (14-10) defeated USC, 13-7 at Dedeaux Field. The last time the Bruins posted a win at USC came on May 2, 1999 when UCLA defeated the Trojans, 8-5.

After the Trojans posted one run in the bottom of the first, UCLA came back to take a 3-1 lead in the third inning. A leadoff single from Anthony Norman started the rally and after an out, Chad Concolino followed with another base hit. A triple from Matt Thayer, which was his second of the weekend, drove in both runners. Mike Svetlic would then bring Thayer across home plate with another single.

The UCLA offense kicked into high gear in the fourth frame, sending nine batters to the plate and posting four more runs. Brett McMillan led off the inning with a single up the middle. Brandon Averill would walk a batter later before Norman loaded the bases when Trojan pitcher Bobby Paschal mishandled his ground ball. Chris Denove would bring two runners in with a double to left field. A sacrifice fly from Concolino brought in another before Denove came home on a double from Thayer.

The bottom of the frame would see three Trojans cross home plate to bring USC within three runs as the Bruins led 7-4.

Five Bruin runs came across home plate in the fifth inning as UCLA once again sent nine batters to the plate. A one-out rally would begin on a double from Averill. The third baseman would advance to third on an error by Trojan first baseman Joey Metropoulos. With runners at the corners, Denove would bring one in with a single up the middle. A walk to Concolino would load the bases and Svetlic would clear them with a double to left center field. The speedy second baseman would then post the 12th Bruin run of the game on a single from Wes Whisler. After five frames, UCLA led 12-4.

The Trojans posted three runs in the bottom of the sixth to drop the Bruin lead to five runs. However, UCLA reliever Brian Schroeder shut down the Trojan attack in the seventh inning as he forced Jeff Clement to ground into a double play to end a bases loaded threat. Schroeder would earn his second save of the season as he closed out the game for UCLA.

The Bruins would add another run in top of the ninth in when Svetlic drove in Concolino on a sacrifice fly.

Svetlic ended the day with five RBI to lead the Bruins, while Thayer and Denove each drove in three.

UCLA will next head to San Diego State on Tuesday for a game that was added to the schedule after a rain out against Pacific before opening Pac-10 play against top-ranked Stanford on Friday night. Tuesday's game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
