UCLA CONCLUDES REGULAR SEASON AT USC:
UCLA (18-5, 7-1 MPSF) will look to sweep its cross-town rival and top-ranked USC (17-3, 7-1) this weekend when the teams face-off at 10:00 a.m. at McDonald's Swim Stadium prior to the start of the football game. The Bruins defeated the Trojans, 6-5 in overtime on October 26th at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center in their only other meeting this season. With the sweep, the Bruins can claim all five Lexus Gauntlet points for men's water polo.
Leading the Trojan attack is sophomore two-meter player Juraj Zatovic. He has posted 45 goals in 20 matches. Goalkeeper Bozidar Damjanovic has been USC's man in the goal with 144 saves this season.
BRUINS WRAP UP MPSF WITH VICTORY OVER PEPPERDINE:
The Bruins avenged two early losses with a 7-6 overtime win over Pepperdine on Saturday at the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center. With the win, UCLA finished its MPSF season with a 7-1 mark and in a tie for first place in the conference.
After trading goals throughout the game, Brett Ormsby sealed the win for the Bruins with his game-winner in the first overtime period. He led all scorers with three goals. Goalkeeper Joseph Axelrad continued his stellar play with nine saves, while only allowing six goals in 34 minutes of action.
ORMSBY NAMED MPSF CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
After scoring 10 goals in three matches over the course of the week, junior driver Brett Ormsby was named the MPSF/Mikasa Co-Player of the Week along with Stanford's Tony Azevedo for the week of November 3-9.
It marked the second time this season Ormsby was honored by the conference and the fifth time in his career. A UCLA player has been selected for the weekly honor four times in 2003.
UCLA EARNS THIRD SEED IN MPSF TOURNAMENT:
Due to MPSF tiebreakers, the Bruins will get the third seed in the MPSF Tournament, with USC claiming the top spot and Stanford with the second seed after the three teams tied for first place in the conference. The Bruins will face-off with sixth-seeded Pepperdine in the first round of the tournament.
UCLA is hosting the MPSF Championships at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach, November 28th-30th.
BRUINS IN THE POLL:
The Bruins remained in the fourth spot in last week's Collegiate Coaches Water Polo Poll after sweeping three contests. The poll is released every Wednesday during the season and can be found at www.collegiatewaterpolo.org.
