No. 8 UCLA to Host Arizona Schools . . .
Following a long week at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors, the eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (7-3) returns home this week, hosting Arizona on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and Arizona State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Both matches, which will not count in the Pac-10 standings, will be at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Bruins Compete at USTA/ITA National Team Indoors . . .
UCLA is coming off a fifth-place showing at last week's USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle. The Bruins opened up the tournament with a 4-2 victory over No. 10 LSU in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals the following day, UCLA dropped a tight 4-3 decision to eventual champion No. 2 Georgia. The Bruins were able to rebound on Sunday however, defeating No. 14 Washington, 4-1 in a consolation match.
New ITA Team/Individual Rankings Released . . .
UCLA dropped a spot to No. 8 in the latest Fila/ITA Rankings released this week. Individual rankings were also released on Wednesday for the first time in more than a month. Benjamin Kohlloeffel remains at No. 3 in singles play. He is followed by No. 75 Michael Look and No. 82 Mathieu Dehaine. In doubles, Philipp Gruendler and Kohlloeffel check in at No. 10. Despite not playing together since the fall, Chris Surapol and Jeremy Drean are ranked No. 43. Team rankings will be released again on Mar. 1. Individual rankings are not due out again until Mar. 7.
Kohlloeffel Owns Longest Winning Streaks . . .
Junior Benjamin Kohlloeffel currently owns the longest winning streaks on the team in both singles and doubles. Kohlloeffel, who is ranked third nationally with a 26-3 overall record, is 14-1 against ranked opponents. During his streak, he has defeated No. 21 KC Corkery (Stanford), No. 32 Alex Slovic (Washington) and No. 66 Ken Skupski (LSU). He and teammate Philipp Gruendler have won their last eight matches. The longest winning streak this season is 16, also held by Kohlloeffel, who carried it over from the fall into the spring.
Look Fitting in at No. 6 . . .
Freshman Michael Look owns a 5-1 record at the No. 6 singles position, as he entered the rankings for the first time in his career this week at No. 75. Look, who played No. 6 during all three of UCLA's matches at the Team Indoors going 2-1, owns a 13-5 overall record. He accounted for two points in Seattle, defeating Georgia's Colin Purcell and Washington's Mike Ricks in straight sets.
Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
UCLA head coach Billy Martin owns a 287-56 (.837) overall record in his 13th season in Westwood. He led UCLA to its first NCAA title in more than 20 years this past May, as the Bruins pulled off a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Baylor in the 2005 NCAA final. As a player at UCLA in 1975, Martin captured the NCAA Singles Championship before going on to a very successful professional career. He is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
