No. 8 Men's Tennis Ends Regular Season Against USC

April 18, 2006

Bruins Close Out Regular Season at USC . . .
The No. 8 UCLA men's tennis team (16-5; 5-1 Pac-10) closes out its 2006 regular season schedule this Friday, traveling across town to face USC (8-13; 1-5 Pac-10) at the Marks Tennis Stadium beginning at 3:00 p.m. It will mark the second meeting between the two teams this season, as the Bruins posted a 5-2 victory over the Trojans in a non-conference match back on Feb. 28. UCLA leads the all-time series 62-32, posting a 12-3 record against USC since the 2000 season. Points for the Lexus Gauntlet will be on the line.

Bruins On the Verge of Third Straight Pac-10 Title . . .
With a victory over USC on Friday, UCLA will guarantee itself at least a share of this year's Pac-10 title, marking the third year in a row that the Bruins have won the conference after being co-champions with USC (2004) and Washington (2005) the past two years. Joining the Bruins with one conference loss are Stanford, Cal and Washington.

UCLA Goes 1-1 in Northwest Road Trip . . .
UCLA went 1-1 in Pac-10 matches against Oregon and Washington over the weekend. The Bruins started the trip with a 7-0 decision over unranked Oregon on Friday in Eugene. UCLA stumbled a day later up in Seattle, however, falling to No. 20 Washington, 4-3 in a tight match at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Bruins won the doubles point, however the Huskies were able to win four of the six singles matches to take the victory. All five of the Bruins' losses this season have been 4-3 scores.

UCLA in the Fila/ITA Rankings . . .
UCLA checks in at No. 7 in the latest Fila/ITA Rankings released on Tuesday. The Bruins moved down one spot after falling to Washington on Saturday. Individual rankings were also released. The Bruins have four players ranked in singles led by the nation's current No. 1 player Benjamin Kohlloeffel. He is followed by Chris Surapol (No. 71), Haythem Abid (No. 96) and Mathieu Dehaine (No. 97). Philipp Gruendler and Kohlloeffel are ranked No. 2 in doubles. New team rankings are released every Tuesday, with individual rankings coming out every two weeks.

Gruendler/Kohlloeffel Tie UCLA Doubles Record . . .
UCLA's No. 1 doubles team of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel won their 19th straight match on Saturday, tying the team record for consecutive dual-match victories. Pat Galbraith and Brian Garrow originally set the record back in 1989. Gruendler and Kohlloeffel, the nation's No. 2-ranked team with an overall mark of 24-2, can break the record with a victory over USC this Friday.

NCAA Regional Sites Announced Soon . . .
Regardless of its outcome against USC this Friday, UCLA will likely be selected to host NCAA First & Second Round action May 13-14 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins have hosted every year since regionals began back in 1998. If UCLA is able to get through the regionals, it will advance to the 16-team NCAA Championships, May 20-23 at Stanford University.

Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
UCLA head coach Billy Martin owns a 296-58 (.836) overall record in his 13th season in Westwood. He led UCLA to its first NCAA title in more than 20 years this past May, as the Bruins pulled off a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Baylor in the 2005 NCAA final. As a player at UCLA in 1975, Martin captured the NCAA Singles Championship before going on to a very successful professional career. He is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
