Andre Patterson, a 6-7 forward from Los Angeles Washington Prep, who lettered last year as a true freshman on the UCLA men's basketball team, is academically ineligible. Patterson will not be enrolled during the current UCLA fall quarter and cannot play for the Bruins.
UCLA* fall quarter classes started on Thursday. Patterson is currently enrolled at Santa Monica College (SMC)** for its fall semester. Patterson's academic progress, as well as NCAA satisfactory progress, will be reassessed at the end of the current SMC fall semester. A determination about whether Patterson would be able to return to UCLA for 2003 winter quarter will be made at that time.
Last season, Patterson appeared in 29 games and averaged 9.2 minutes, 2.3 points and shot 50.0 (28-56) from the field and 64.7 (11-17) from the foul line, with 18 blocked shots.
"We hope that Andre is able to return to our team before the end of the season," said Bruin head coach Steve Lavin. "The most important thing for him right now is to focus on his academics. That's what Andre is currently concentrating on so he can come back to UCLA and rejoin the team."
