UCLA, Rated No. 26 In The U. S., Runs At Pac-10 Meet On Saturday

Eric Peterson's UCLA women, ranked No. 26 in the U. S., and men's cross country teams on Saturday (Oct. 30) will compete in the 2004 Pacific-10 Cross Country Championships, held at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The women's 6000m race will start at 9:30 a.m. and the men's 8000m event will begin at 10:30 a.m.

It will be the 19th annual women's race. Stanford, the defending Pac-10 and NCAA Champion, is ranked No. 1 in the U. S. and Cardinal senior Sara Bei is the two-time defending individual champion. Along with Stanford and UCLA, the other nationally-ranked Pac-10 squad is No. 8 Arizona State.

It's the 36th annual men's race. Stanford is the defending Pac-10 and NCAA Champions and currently ranked No. 2 in the U. S. Other nationally-rated Pac-10 squads include No. 9 Arizona State and No. 28 Oregon.

UCLA Women
Running for the Bruins will be - senior Carmen Winant; juniors, Alejandra Barrientos, Jenna Timinsky, Allison Hall, Sarah West and Lori Mann; sophomores, Ashely Caldwell and Alison Costello and freshmen, Olga Aulet-Leon and Monika Rothenburger.

Costello, the 2004 U. S. Junior cross country champion, has been UCLA's top runner most of this season. She placed sixth (17:26.5/5000m) at the USF Invite (Sept. 4), sixth (14:01/4000m) at the Stanford Invite (Sept. 25) and 25th (17:28/5000m) at the Notre Dame Invite (Oct. 1). The USF Invite on Sept. 4 was run on the same course as Saturday's Pac-10 Championships.

Sophomore Ashley Caldwell and Costello led UCLA at the Pre-NCAA Invitational (Oct. 16 in Terre Haute, IN), with Caldwell finishing 53rd (21:43.1/6000m) and Costello 56th (21:44.6). In 2003, Caldwell earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships and second-team All-Pac-10 at the league meet.

Last season, the Bruin women used the Pac-10 Championships as the beginning of their run to an automatic team berth to the NCAA. In 2003, UCLA placed third at the Pac-10 (over the 6000m course, Caldwell placed 14th/22:17.2 and Costello finished 15th/22:19.0), second at the NCAA West Region (over the 6000m course, Caldwell placed 11th/20:50 and Costello finished 14th/20:53) and at the NCAA Championships, the Bruins finished seventh (UCLA's highest placement since 1985/Caldwell finished 36th, 20:45.6 over 6000m).

Looking Ahead
On Nov. 13, UCLA will head to Fresno for the NCAA West Region Championships. From there, the Bruins will look to qualify to the 2004 NCAA Championships, Nov. 22 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN.
