Los Angeles, CA - The No. 1 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 11 UC Santa Barbara this afternoon 12-0 at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. It was the final game of the regular season for the Bruins and the final home game for seven Bruin seniors. With the victory the Bruins finish the 2003 regular season 19-3 overall and 8-2 in the MPSF.
The Bruins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period off goals from a trio of seniors: Jessica Lopez, Ashley Stachowski and Maureen Flanagan. In the second period a pair of goals from freshman Kelly Rulon and a goal from sophomore Kristyn Pulver made it 6-0 UCLA at half. The second half would be more of the same for the Bruins, as goals from Flanagan, junior Natalie Golda, freshman Kristina Kunkel, sophomore Jody Schmidt, senior Mari Joyce, and freshman Katherine Belden would give the Bruins the 12-0 victory. The Bruin defense was outstanding, forcing numerous shot clock violations, with senior Jaime Hipp recording four saves and freshman Tahlia Kerr two saves.
Each Bruin senior had a moment to shine in today's game, along with four of the six position player seniors scoring, Robin Beauregard and Devon McIntyre each assisted on a goal, and were instrumental in shutting down the Gaucho offense.
Next weekend the Bruins travel north to Stanford to take part in the MPSF Tournament, from April 25-27. The Bruins third in the MPSF at the moment, are likely to be seeded third in the tournament, pending the outcome of other MPSF matches.
