UCLA's women's water polo coach Adam Krikorian has signed three of the nation's top recruits. They will enter UCLA in the fall of 2005 and are expected to have an immediate impact on the program.
Anne Belden (Newport Beach, CA/Newport Harbor HS) is a driver who earned All-CIF honors in high school. She completes a family trio in the Bruin water polo program. Her brother Peter is a key player on the top ranked men's team and her sister Katherine is a major contributor on the women's team at UCLA. Belden was one of the USA Youth Team's leading scorers in the tri-nation event in Sydney, Australia.
Tanya Gandy (San Diego, CA/Rancho Bernardo HS) is a driver and is considered one of the top five players in the nation. She is a strong field player and student athlete. In high school, Gandy earned first team All-CIF honors and was selected to the first team Tribune Newspaper squad. During the summer, she was one of the leading goal scorers in the Tri-Nations Tournament in Australia.
Katie Rulon (San Diego, CA/University of San Diego HS) is a driver who is rated as one of the top three recruits in the nation. Her sister Kelly was a starter on UCLA's 2003 NCAA Championship Team and received a bronze medal with the USA women's team in the 2004 Olympics. Rulon was the CIF and Union Tribune Newspaper Player of the Year after leading her high school team to the CIF title. In the Division II championship game, she scored six out of her team's seven goals. In two full seasons of high school water polo, Rulon had 292 goals, 245 steals, and 77 assists. Last year, she had 140 goals, 131 steals, and 43 assists while shooting over 50% in her goal attempts.
"Anne has a keen sense of the game and will be a great weapon with her vision and left handed arm on the right side of the pool. Katie's versatility, strength, and speed will be helpful in any area the team needs. Tanya is a dynamic player whose live arm should be a big offensive threat on the next level," said Krikorian. "All three of these student-athletes are incredibly talented but more importantly are wonderful people whose strong character will help continue the great tradition of UCLA Water Polo."
