LOS ANGELES - Despite playing without its top singles player and one-half of its No. 1 doubles team, the fourth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team posted a solid 5-2 victory over No. 37 Pepperdine Saturday at The Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins improve to 3-0 on the year and will take a perfect record into next week's USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisc.

The loss of sophomore Daniela Bercek, who did not play Saturday due to illness, forced UCLA head coach Stella Sampras Webster to rearrange her lineup. It didn't appear to affect the Bruins at all in doubles, as UCLA cruised to victories on all three courts to claim the point.

In singles play, UCLA's Riza Zalameda and Laura Gordon both turned in outstanding performances in Bercek's absence. Zalameda, who was playing her first dual match at the No. 1 position, posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over 52nd-ranked Natalie Braverman. Gordon, who has been injured and was only expected to play doubles on Saturday, defeated Pepperdine's Lise Sissler, 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.

Down 3-0 in the dual match, Pepperdine got on the board when 65th-ranked Caroline Raba defeated No. 122 Alex McGoodwin, 6-3, 6-4 at court No. 2. However, UCLA clinched the match moments later when Sarah Gregg knocked off No. 119 Sylvia Kosakowski, 6-0, 7-5 at court No. 4.

With the Bruins ahead 4-1 and the dual match already decided, play still continued on two courts. Next to finish was court No. 5, where 125th-ranked Elizabeth Lumpkin defeated Pepperdine's Eva Dickes, 7-6(4), 6-2. The Waves won the final match of the day at court No. 3, as No. 57 Bianca Dulgheru defeated UCLA freshman Tracy Lin, 6-3, 7-5.

UCLA will be at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors next Thursday through Sunday (Feb. 3-6). The Bruins' next home match will be on Feb. 12 against Fresno State beginning at 1:30 p.m.
