Merrick Qualifies For Fifth Consecutive U.S. Amateur

UCLA senior John Merrick qualified for his fifth consecutive U.S. Amateur Championships after placing first at a sectional qualifying tournament at Aurora Country Club in Aurora, IL on July 28. Merrick won the tournament with a final score of 136, seven strokes ahead of second-place finishers Patrick Carter and Nicolas Bollini. The U.S. Amateur will take place Aug. 18-24 at the Oakmont (PA) Country Club.

Merrick, Breene Murphy, John Poucher, Doug Batty and Steve Jones are competing at the Western Amateur, which runs July 30-Aug. 3 at Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, MI.

At the Porter Cup July 22-26 at the Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston, NY, five Bruins placed in the Top 50. Merrick was the top UCLA finisher, tying for 22nd with a one-under par 279 (72-70-68-69). Travis Johnson was close behind in 30th place with an even par 280 (67-69-70-74). Steve Conway tied for 48th with a five-over 285 (69-70-73-73).
