Oct. 29, 2005

Stanford, Calif. - The fourth-ranked UCLA men's water polo team lost in double-overtime to No. 3 Stanford on Saturday, 8-9, in a MPSF conference match at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center. The loss drops UCLA to 15-5 overall and 2-1 in MPSF play, while Stanford improves to 14-3 and 3-0 in conference action.

Senior attackers John Blanchette and David Pietsch posted two goals each, as sophomores Matthew Jacobs, Marco Santos, Cameron Smith, and junior Logan Powell each scored a goal apiece for the Bruins. Junior goalkeeper Will Didinger finished the match with 10 saves.

UCLA fell behind to the Cardinal 1-0 after the first period, but scored two goals in the second period to tie the match at 2-2 heading into the second half. The Bruins exploded in the third period with four goals and entered the final period of regulation up 6-3 on the Cardinal.

Stanford would match UCLA's four-goal output in the third period with four Cardinal goals in the fourth period, to erase the Bruins' lead. UCLA managed one more goal in the final period and sent the game into overtime tied at 7-7.

Powell scored UCLA's only goal in extra play in the first overtime, but Stanford's Thomas Hopkins matched the goal as UCLA and Stanford remained tied at 8-8 after the first overtime period. Hopkins would score the game-winning goal in the second overtime against the Bruins with only 15 seconds remaining on the game clock to earn the victory for the Cardinal.

Three of the Bruins five losses so far this season have been to Stanford, with all three losses being decided by only one goal.

UCLA will conclude this weekend's action with a match on Sunday, Oct. 30 at UC Santa Cruz. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
