Denove Leads UCLA to 3-2 Victory at Pepperdine

April 6, 2004

Box Score

MALIBU, C - Chris Denove hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to lead UCLA (16-13) to a 3-2 win at Pepperdine (14-16) on Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D Field Stadium.

Denove's home run was his second of the season as he moved the Bruins into the lead after trailing 2-1. His first homer of 2004 was a walk-off homer against UC Santa Barbara on March 2. He finished the day going 2-for-4 to lead UCLA.

After leaving runners on base in each of the first four frames, the Bruins posted a run in the fifth as Preston Griffin's sacrifice fly drove in Ryan McCarthy. McCarthy had reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a ground out.

Starter David Johnson was solid in his second start of the season. The right-hander faced only 13 battters through the first four innings and allowed only four hits in five innings of work.

Freshmen relievers Kevin Brophy, Brian Schroeder and Brant Rustich shut down the Waves in the late innings. Brophy posted his second win in three days as he improved to 3-0 on the season. Rustich earned his first collegiate save as he pitched the final 1.1 innings for UCLA.

UCLA will return to Pac-10 play on Thursday night as it travels to Arizona for a three-game series. Thursday night's game is set to start at 7:00 p.m. as junior right-hander Bryan Beck will take the mound for the Bruins.
