The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team will travel to No. 1 USC for an MPSF match at 5:00 PM on Saturday, April 8th. This season, the Bruins (21-2) are 0-1 against USC. Last year, UCLA defeated USC three times, including a win in its only overtime game.
Earlier this year, UCLA played USC in the championship game of the Stanford Invitational. The game was tight through but UCLA lost, 10-8. The Bruins were held scoreless in the fourth quarter, while USC scored two goals to break an 8-8 tie and win the championship.
The game will be broadcast online at www.uclabruins.com. Dave Marcus and Michael Sondheimer are doing the play by play. Their color analyst will be former UCLA All-American and international player Catherine von Schwarz.
Saturday's game will be played in conjunction with Swim with Mike, an annual swim-a-thon held to raise money for the USC Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund. The UCLA womens water polo team is going to participate (along with UH and USC) in Swim With Mike by swimming 5000 laps.
Becki McCafferty was one former UCLA player who benefitted from this organization. An All American swimmer from UCLA, Becki was injured in a body surfing accident. While still in the hospital, Mike Nyeholt walked into her room on crutches and offered her a scholarship to USC and a specially equipped van, making her the second Swim With Mike scholarship recipient. Winner of the Ms. Wheelchair California honor, Becki studied exercise physiology in the graduate program at USC. She also earned a master's in business administration (MBA). Becki is employed by Cal Optima, a health care management organization in Orange County. She was married to Richard Melli in 1996.
