Los Angeles - Bruin midfielder Whitney Jones broke a 1-1 tie in the 48th minute of the match, helping the No. 3 seeded UCLA women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Pepperdine Sunday in an NCAA Second Round match before 897 fans at UCLA's Drake Stadium. With the victory, UCLA moves to 19-2-0 overall and advances to the NCAA Round of 16 to face Dayton next Saturday at Drake Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Flyers were a 2-0 winner over Miami (OH) on Sunday.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute of the match on an own goal by the Waves. Bruin forward Stephanie Rigamat crossed a high ball into the Pepperdine box that was inadvertently headed in by a defender trying to clear the ball.
Pepperdine answered in the 35th minute of play when Wave defender Ashley Swanson launched a 50-yard free kick into the UCLA box that was headed in by midfielder Ali Pavoni.
Following a 1-1 tie at the half, UCLA came out strong in the second half, scoring its second goal a little more than two minutes into play. Bruin defender Bethany Bogart hit a bouncing free kick through the Pepperdine box to a waiting Jones who knocked it in from about seven yards out. That goal proved to be the game winner as UCLA held the Waves to just one second half shot.
"Player for player, UCLA just has so much depth and they are so athletic," said Pepperdine head coach Tim Ward. "They deserved to win. A few years ago I don't think it would've been a one-goal game against UCLA. I think they would've blown us out. We deserved to be here. The future looks extremely bright for us."
The Bruins dominated most of the game, out-shooting the Waves, 17-6, including 12-1 in the second half.
"We picked up our intensity for sure in the second half," said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. We didn't play extremely well in the first half, but I thought if we could play better in the second half, we would get the result. (Pepperdine) is a good team and they played a great game."
Next Saturday's match against Dayton will be UCLA's third-straight appearance in the round of 16.
