Freshman Tess Schofield qualified for the platform final at the 2006 U.S. Diving Open Championships in Indianapolis, IN after a 10th-place finish in the semifinals.

Earlier in the week, Schofield placed seventh in the U.S. Open qualifying rounds with a score of 245.25 to advance to the U.S. Open meet. In the prelims, she placed 14th with a score of 206.45 (top-18 advanced to the semifinal) and then finished 10th in the semi's with a score of 235.10 to advance to Saturday's final (top-12 advance).

"Tess has just had a great year," said Head Dive Coach Tom Stebbins. "I am very impressed with her improvement as an athlete. She is ahead of our springboard plan (compared to where I had hoped she would be), and is right on target with her platform list. I am looking forward to seeing her development continue through the spring and into next year. It is nice to mark the end of her first season of competition on such a high note."

Junior Amanda Blong, who redshirted the 2005-06 season was also in action at the U.S. Open meet. Blong competed on both the 1M and 3M boards in the qualifying rounds, and advanced to the Open meet on 1M. Blong placed 26th on 3M with a score of 179.65 and did not advanced to the Open meet.

On 1M in the qualifying rounds, Blong placed 15th with a score of 197.0 to advance to Friday's Open meet. In the prelims of the Open meet, Blong placed 20th with a score of 198.35 and did not advanced to the semifinals.

"It is nice to have Amanda back in our rotation," noted Stebbins. "We really had some great things going into the winter, when an injury really hampered her development. Now that Amanda has a clear picture of what she needs to do to get back on top, I have every confidence that this year away from collegiate competition will begin to pay-off in future competitions."

"As for the group as a whole, I couldn't be happier. It is always nice to have such a quality group of student-athletes with which to work. I cannot say enough about how much of a pleasure it is to walk on to our pool deck each day. While we had a very successful year, we have a long way to go to live up to the commitment UCLA, our athletic department, and specifically our swimming and diving program makes to each of us as individuals. We are in a great spot for the coming years."
