UCLA will send three of its young track and field standouts this week to the World Junior T & F Championships, held Oct. 17-22 in Santiago, Chile.
Representing the Bruins will be sophomore Cari Soong, from Riverside North HS, in the women's hammer throw, redshirt freshman Dan Ames, from Lakeside and El Capitan HS, in the men's discus and shot put and freshman Jessica Cosby, from Reseda and Cleveland HS, in the women's shot put.
At the U. S. Junior Meet, June 23-24 in Denton, TX, Soong won the women's hammer (194-10), Ames placed first in the men's discus (189-8) and second in the shot put (58-8 1/2) and Cosby placed second in the women's shot put (50-3 1/2, No. 3 prep mark last season in the U. S.).
During the 1999-2000 season, Soong as a true freshman for the Bruins earned All-America honors in the women's hammer at the NCAA Outdoor with a distance of 197-7 (eighth-place, No. 2 U. S. Junior mark), Ames was a Bruin redshirt and Cosby as a senior prepster earned T & F News HS All-America in the shot put.
