Nguyen, Caldwell Named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

UCLA junior Jacqueline Nguyen (first-team) and junior Ashley Caldwell (third-team) have been named 2005 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars in the sport of track & field, it was announced Wednesday.

Nguyen (Atherton, CA/Castilleja HS), a redshirt in outdoor track this spring, has a 3.70 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is a physiological science major. In indoor track this winter she vaulted 13-4.50 and last spring, she earned NCAA Outdoor All-American honor s by placing fifth in the pole vault, with a mark of 13-5.25 (personal-best, No. 4 in UCLA history). In 2004, she also earned second-team All-Academic Pac-10.

Caldwell (Los Gatos HS), who is not competing this spring because of a stress fracture (left tibia), has a 3.29 GPA and is a political science major. A three-time All-American, last spring she earned All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor (800m, 10th overall) and won the 800m at the Pac-10 (2:05.01, No. 4 in school history). In 2004, she was Honorable Mention Pac-10 All-Academic.

In 1992, Black Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Award to honor undergraduate students of color who exemplify the standards set by tennis and Bruin great Arthur Ashe Jr., the first prominent African-American male tennis player in both the collegiate and professional ranks.

A scholar athlete at UCLA, he graduated in 1966, Ashe in 1965 as senior captain led UCLA to the NCAA team Championship, winning both the singles and doubles (with Ian Crookenden) titles. As a professional, he won three Grand Slam singles crowns (1968 U. S. Open, 1970 Australian Open, 1975 Wimbledon). Sports Illustrated name d Ashe the 1992 Sportsman of the Year. Arthur Ashe Jr. died on Feb. 6, 1993.

Each year Black Issues In Higher Education invites every postsecondary institution in the country to participate in this awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability, student-athletes named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence as well as community activism.

To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities. This year approximately 600 male and female student-athletes from across the country were nominated.
