Cyndi Gallagher's UCLA swim and dive team fell to UC-Berkeley on Saturday 161-139 in Pac-10 dual meet action. Cal improves to 14-9 all-time against the Bruins as UCLA fell to 5-3 (2-3 Pac-10) after losses to both Northern California schools this weekend.
Despite losing to the Bears, the Bruins again posted some strong times in the pool with Kim Vandenberg again leading the team with three NCAA qualifying times and three individual wins. Her meet was highlighted by an "A" time in the 200 Fly (1:57.37). Jane Imagane (1000 Free, 9:54.21)), Nicolette Teo (200 Breast, 2:16.43) and Jeana Fuccillo (400 IM, 4:18.71) also picked up individual wins.
Other Bruins who swam NCAA "B" qualifying times were Katie Arnold (100 Back, 55.40), Teo (100 Breast, 1:03.11; 200 Breast, 2:16.43), Fuccillo (200 Breast, 2:16.60; 400 IM, 4:18.71), Chiemi Yamamoto (200 Breast, 2:16.70; 400 IM, 4:18.99), and Kim Scarborough (400 IM, 4:21.72) and the 200 Medley Relay team of Arnold, Eileen Seissen, Vandenberg and Amy Thurman (1:42.66).
In diving action, it was a Bruin sweep in both the one-meter and three-meter events. Blong won the one-meter with a score of 257.40, while teammates Paige Thompson (249.53) and Janine Strack (248.33) placed second and third. Strack won the three-meter with a score of 278.55, while Thompson placed second (265.875) and Blong finished third (245.03).
The Bruins will head back to Southern California to prepare for crosstown rival USC. UCLA will take on the Trojans on Saturday, Feb. 12 at USC for the final Pac-10 dual meet of the season.
