Four Bruins Selected in Second Day of MLB Draft

June 8, 2004

Right-handed pitcher Kyle Wilson, senior utility Brandon Averill, senior second baseman Mike Svetlic, and outfielder Matt Thayer were all selected in the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft. Along with the five that were selected on Monday, nine Bruins were chosen in this year's draft. That is the third highest total for a Bruin team.

Wilson was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 22nd round, the 658th pick overall. In 2004, he was second on the Bruin staff with a 3.38 ERA. In only 26.2 innings of action, the Valencia native struck out 37 batters. In his three years in Westwood, Wilson struck out 58 batters in 70.1 innings of work.

Averill, one of the 2004 co-captains, was chosen by the Houston Astros in the 24th round, the 724th pick overall. With over 150 starts at UCLA, the Orange product had seen time in the Bruin infield, outfield, on the mound and behind the plate. A powerful hitter, Averill hit 27 career home runs and finished his career with a .513 slugging percentage. Over his four years at UCLA, he hit .307.

Svetlic, who transferred to UCLA from New Mexico prior to the 2004 season, was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 29th round. A skilled infielder, Svetlic was second in the Pac-10 with 188 assists on the year. The Kansas City, Missouri native also led the Bruins with 11 sacrifice hits on the season.

A native of Woodland Hills, Thayer was drafted in the 31st round by the San Diego Padres after starting in the Bruin outfield for the past three years. The 2004 leader in stolen bases, Thayer has stolen 27 bases in his UCLA career. This season, he claimed the team batting title with a .323 average. He also paced the Bruins with 35 walks and 49 runs scored.
