AUSTIN, Texas - Ninth-ranked UCLA defeated Texas, 3-0, in the final game of the round-robin Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. The Bruins won the match 30-24, 30-17, 30-28 and went 3-0 at the tournament with victories over Texas, UT-Arlington (3-0) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-0). With the win, UCLA improved to 8-1 overall and have won six straight matches, while the Longhorns evened their record at 4-4 for the year.

UCLA junior Brynn Murphy was voted Most Valuable Player after leading the team with 11 kills in the last game and a total of 38 for the tournament. Krystal McFarland and Chrissie Zartman also were named to the all-tournament team.

UCLA took an early lead in the first game, jumping ahead 12-9 before the Longhorns rally with a 5-2 run to pull even at 14-14. The Bruins then used back-to-back points to regain control and added to their lead with a four-point run on Laura Kroneberger's serve to put the game out of reach at 28-20. The Bruins benefited from a .417 hitting percentage, while limiting the Longhorns to a .238 mark.

The Bruins continued their strong play in the second game and built an 18-9 lead behind the strong play of Brittany Ringel and Murphy. The Longhorns managed to climb back within seven points at 18-11, but UCLA used strong serving and a pointed attack to win the game with a 12-6 run. As in the first game, the Bruins used strong defense to limit UT to a .182 hitting percentage, while having a .382 mark of their own.

Texas came out in the third game strong after the break, taking a 12-5 lead on several Bruin attack errors. UCLA managed to play all the way back and tie the game at 15-15 then take the lead at 20-19. The Bruins extended a three-point lead before Texas came back to tie the score at 23-23. The two teams battled back and forth and fought through four ties, before UCLA strung together back-to-back points at 28-28 to take the third game and the match.

Brynn Murphy had 11 kills to lead UCLA, followed by Cira Wright with nine kills. Wright also led the Bruins with four block assists. As a team, UCLA outhit Texas .288 to .139.

The Bruins open Pac-10 play on Fri., Sept. 19, with a 7 p.m. matchup against top-ranked and defending NCAA champion USC. The match will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by Fox Sports Net.
