Bruins Cannot Comeback, Fall 8-3 At Hawaii

Feb. 9, 2003

Final Stats

The Bruins (3-4) could not overcome a five run Hawaii (2-1) lead after four innings, falling 8-3 in the final game of the three-game series in front of 1,417 fans at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu.

The Bruins' trend of scoring in the first inning continued as Preston Griffin doubled to left field on the first pitch of the game. Sean Carpenter advanced Griffin to third on a ground out to second base. He scored on a sacrifice fly from Wes Whisler. After a half inning, UCLA led 1-0.

Another trend of the series continued in the bottom of the inning, as the Rainbows got even in a hurry. Two walks and two singles, including a two-RBI hit from Rocky Russo put Hawaii on the board. At the end of one inning of action, Hawaii led 2-1.

Hawaii continued to build upon its lead in the third after scoring one in the bottom of the second. Two runs scored on a single from Tim Montgomery. Both runners had reached base on walks from Janssen, which marked the fourth and fifth walks he had issued.

The fourth inning started well for UCLA as Billy Susdorf and Chris Denove led off with singles to left field. However, Brett McMillan hit into a double play and Ryan McCarthy flew out to center field to end the inning.

For the fourth consecutive inning Hawaii added a run to its total. An error from McCarthy allowed Sansaver to reach base to start off the inning. He would later advance and score on a pair of fielder's choices to give the Rainbows a 6-1 advantage.

UCLA cut the Hawaii lead back to four in the top of the sixth. A fly out from Matt Thayer started the inning. Adam Simon, who was making his first start in right field, advanced all the way to second on an error from the catcher on his bunt attempt. He would move to third on a single from Griffin. Carpenter walked to load the bases for Whisler. He would reach base and Simon would score on a fielder's choice by the second baseman. The rally would fall short as Susdorf flew out to center with two runners left on base.

Bruin reliever Hector Ambriz would sit down three Rainbow batters in the fifth, the first scoreless inning of the game for Hawaii. He would do the same in the sixth, marking eight straight retired batters. His streak would end in the seventh as two runs scored after a wild pitch and singles from Rocky Russo and Tim Montgomery.

Hawaii reliever Clary Carlsen would prove to be as effective on the Bruins as he retired six consecutive Bruins in the seventh and eighth. Doug Silva relieved Ambriz in the bottom of the eighth and walked two to start the inning. He responded quickly, striking out Brent Cook on three pitches and retiring the next two batters.

The Bruins attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth, as McMillan led-off with a double to right center. After a ground out advanced him to third, pinch hitter Chris Jensen drove him home with an RBI-single. Simon flew out to center for the second out, but Griffin kept the Bruins alive with a single to shortstop. Carpenter loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. It would not be enough though as Whisler grounded out to end the game.

The Bruins will return to the mainland and face-off with Big West powerhouse Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7:00 at Goodwin Field.
